Day 3: Rules to Survive Seemingly Chaotic Parking Lots

They’re lawless zones of chaos. They swarm with cars, people and a variety of obstacles. Figure it out yet? I’m talking about parking lots.

While not the most dangerous places on the road, they are home to many a fender bender and the related repair bill – and sometimes a real tragedy involving small kids. Here are some tips to stay safe in the lots.

  1. Be aware, always. Most drivers treat the painted lanes in parking lots as optional. A car could be coming from any direction at any time.
  2. Always look out for people or running children. They could pop out of nowhere.
  3. Always try to back into a space or find a pull-through spot. This gives you a better view when exiting your space.
  4. Drive slowly. Give yourself plenty of time to react to any possible hazard.
  5. Remember that pedestrians in crosswalks always have the right of way – give way to them and maybe next time, they’ll give way to someone else.
