the facts

During the summer months, nearly all students experience a learning loss – a decline in knowledge and academic skills from being out of school for a couple of months.

To prevent this decline, students must remain engaged academically throughout the summer.

The YMCA High Point Scholars Program in Seattle provides that engagement for nearly 100 elementary school students. The six-week, full-day program provides extra support and extended learning opportunities that promote student success. The program conducts regular assessments to measure the students' progress and ensure they're not falling behind.

YMCA High Point Scholars participate in four hours of academic instruction – by certified teachers and teaching assistants – each day. Additionally, students participate in enrichment activities such as writing, photography and art classes as well as physical activities. As a reward for participation and achievement, students are invited on local field trips – to parks, beaches, the zoo and other sites outside the city – that connect to their classroom learning.

"We call the students scholars, and their participation is a point of pride for them," said Christi Beckley from YMCA of Greater Seattle. "We've partnered with the school and their families to show students that they are smart and can learn."
